Beginning in January, 2022, political candidates must get signatures on petitions in order to get their name on a ballot. The number of signatures needed for each candidate varies depending on the office they are seeking. A valid petition signature must meet several qualifications. First, to sign a petition, you must reside in the political district in which the candidate plans to serve. Your voter’s registration card shows your legislative districts and your polling place. Second, it is important to sign your name on the petition as it appears on your voter’s registration card. Third, you need to have a valid voter’s registration card and your address needs to be current. If you have moved since the last election, please notify the Elections Department, Lee County Clerk, 112 E. Second St., Dixon, IL 61021 or call 815/288-3309 and ask for elections.
The people collecting signatures on petitions are precinct committeepersons, candidates, and volunteers. If you want to volunteer, please contact Sarah Bingaman 630-341-4971. Remember, your signature makes it possible for the candidate’s name to appear on a ballot. We hope you consider signing a petition. This is one of the most basic steps in our democracy. We look forward to knocking on your door this fall.
